Issue #171: JAMO's JAMs & GIGs for 12/29/10

Welcome to JAMO’S JAMS & GIGS for 12/29/10, issue #171, the last issue of the decade.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I’ll see you all at the Stanhope House. Lotsa new news for 2011….

Well, another year has passed and Jimmy still hasn’t paid me…….I guess once a deadbeat….

On another note, I am now writing for Examiner.com! I am the Allentown Local Music Examiner, and I will be reviewing music venues, bands, your CD’s and generally reporting on the live music scene in general. I’ll be covering the area from central New Jersey through to Allentown , PA. The articles will be seen nationwide. Don’t worry – I intend to promote our music, not trash it! I welcome your comments – as a matter of fact, I need them!

Attention all you Island Park Alumni!!! JAMO returns!!!! See Fri, January 21 below. Between the Tuesday night jams and the weekend bands, this place just might be a home for us… but not if you don’t come!!! The Tuesday night jam here has turned out to be a great thing, so maybe we can work it out for Friday night too. I’m really hoping that this turns out well – remember how much fun we had as a group? Let’s do it again! No one else does it this way, as far as I know.

If you have any trouble reading this thing, just go to http://jamogigcentral.blogspot.com/, and it will all be there. Marisa Chiara does that for me, and I really appreciate her help. You can print it out for yer own use, etc. If you meet her at one of our gigs, be sure to say Hi…

Send me your January & February gigs, folks!

"13 Reasons to buy a CD: Rise and join the Faithful in welcoming the release of 13 reasons, the debut album from North Jersey blues band, The Congregation. With a confluence of talent as diverse their individual influences, this gathering of musicians delivers a listening experience forged from country, folk, punk, and rock unlike any other. The result is a beautifully twisted blues worthy of believing in. The smoky velvet vocals have a cowboy’s swagger and the biting rhythms take hold of your grateful flesh and won’t let go. The brilliant guitar, organic bass , and lyrical prowess swirl together into a wicked brew that tempts and sates the most discriminating musical appetite.

Welcome to JAMO’S JAMS & GIGS for 12/22/10, issue #170.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! Yes, I said CHRISTMAS. Deal with it.

New CD from the Congregation (PR Team Edit: no pun intended) below, as well as new gigs for New Year’s Eve and January. Welcome to all of the new readers! This thing seems to be catching on. Just so you know, this email is read by fans & players in England , Italy , Brazil , Canada , South Africa , Indonesia , Denmark , Mexico , and Jamaica . Even some people from Jersey and PA read it!

I saw Arlene the other night while at the Nancy Coletti Trio show at the Bethlehem Hotel. She was buying Nancy ’s CDs for Christmas presents. GREAT IDEA! The CD’s listed below are all inexpensive for gifts, and they support our friends. [no fishnets required] Info on how to get CDs from Chip Mergott, Gar Francis/the Easy Outs, Nancy Coletti, Ed Pampani/A Pleasant Symmetry, Nasty Ned, and the Congregation is listed in section #4 below.

I’m thinking of putting out a special issue with some of the comments that so many of you have sent to me about clubs & pay. NO names, so don’t worry about anything….. Watch this space.

Between the Tuesday night jams and the weekend bands, this place just might be a home for us… but not if you don’t come!!! If you have any trouble reading this thing, just go to http://jamogigcentral.blogspot.com/, and it will all be there. Marisa Chiara does that for me, and I really appreciate her help. You can print it out for yer own use, etc. If you meet her at one of our gigs, be sure to say Hi… and shiver her timbers.

Issue #169: JAMO's JAMs & GIGs fer 12/16/10

Welcome to JAMO’S JAMS & GIGS for 12/15/10, issue #169.

Numero Uno on the List:
Benefit for Wounded Warriors at the Stanhope House this Sunday, 12/19..BE THERE! 2:00 start.

Attention all you Island Park Alumni!!! JAMO returns!!!! See Fri, January 21 below. Between the Tuesday night jams and the weekend bands, this place just might be a home for us… but not if you don’t come!!!

Hey - I got a chance to see Take 6 this weekend – what a group! The best vocals on the planet- 10-time Grammy winners. Go see them if you get a chance.

Send me your December, NYE, and January gigs, folks. Who’s where on NYE? I’m at the Stanhope House.

Here are the results of the pay survey that I’ve been doing. This will be no surprise to any of you, but of almost 250 individual gigs reported, by far the most common figures were $300 & $400, regardless of the number of players, in NJ and in PA. A very few places paid $250-$275, and a very few paid up to $700 for 7 & 8-piece bands. The comments that came along with the pay figures were all very similar. You all know the complaints. My suggestion: ask for $400, more if you have 6 or more pieces. You’ll get it if you try. Minimum $80 per man, and try for $100.

I have to add this: the next time a club owner /manager asks you if you will bring people in, tell them “Yes, but they will be leaving with us too!” It amazes me that clubs don’t advertise themselves and strive to be destinations like the Stanhope House or the Stone Pony. (Even there you play for the door or you have to sell X number of tickets!) Bands want to play there because THE PLACE is famous. Just my two cents worth.

Issue #167: JAMO's JAMs & GIGs for 12/2/10

Welcome to JAMO’S JAMS & GIGS for 12/01/10, issue #167.

JAMO has been feelin’ a bit old to play rock & blues drums lately..that is, until I got an email from Carol Colato – President of Regal Tip drum sticks. Here it is: “You’re never too old to play the drums. My Dad is 89 and still gigging!” Thanks Carol. I think I’ll play ‘till my arms fall off. BTW, I use Regal Tip Jazz drum sticks exclusively. I have for many years – they give me the ability to play loud when I need to, and to play VERY softly with the same pair of sticks. They also last forever. I just put up a Youtube video of part of a surprise drum solo sprung on me at Pavinci’s in November. Wish I had the whole thing. Regal tips!!! Notice the volume changes….. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IohRnzxiP3A

Some items for sale from Todd Wolfe are listed in the “Notes” section”…. [EDITOR's NOTE: Be sure to check with Todd re: his special Kazoo collection!]

Send me your December, NYE, and January gigs. For your information, this email is read by fans & players in England , Italy , Brazil , Canada , South Africa , Indonesia , Denmark , Mexico , and Jamaica . Even some people from Jersey and PA read it!

[EDITOR's NOTE: Italia? Ma, chi sta leggendo la in italia? Oooo.. ma, ciao cari, eh?]

I promise - JAMO’s Pay Report is cookin’ up. Make your contribution now! I just have to figure out how to report something like 250 data points in a way that will help you all out… maybe if I get it figured out I’ll ask the readers in those foreign countries about their pay scales too!
